Counting to 10
The first ten numbers.
Counting to ten is not reciting ten words — it is matching one number word to one object and knowing that the last word said tells you how many there are. Most children say the sequence long before they understand it, usually somewhere between three and five.

What parents should watch for
- Reciting "one two three..." fluently but re-counting when asked "so how many?" — that is the cardinality gap.
- Skipping or double-tapping objects when the row is long or scattered.
- Counting a set correctly, then giving a different total when the same set is counted starting from the other end.
- Being able to count to ten but unable to hand you exactly six from a pile of twelve.
