Subtraction for kids
Taking away, or finding a missing part.
Subtraction isn't just take-away. It's also finding a missing part when you know the whole. Singapore Math teaches both meanings side by side so kids don't get stuck on word problems.
Take-away is the first meaning of subtraction: start with an amount, remove some, count what is left. It suits ages four to six, but it is only one of three meanings — the others are finding a difference and finding a missing part.
Missing-part subtraction asks "what goes with this part to make the whole?" It is the same number bond read a different way, and it is how children come to see subtraction and addition as one relationship rather than two operations. Typically ages five to seven.
Bridging back through ten breaks a subtraction into two easier hops: 13 − 5 becomes 13 − 3 − 2. It mirrors making ten in addition and usually arrives around ages six to eight, once bonds to ten are automatic.
